The Dark Side of the Universe

Did you know that visible matter only represents 5% of the total matter-energy content of the Universe? How did we get to this conclusion? This result is based both on observations and on the theoretical developments in Cosmology that begun in the early 19's. I will briefly go through the Big Bang theory and the observations confirming such theory.
Among the matter content of the Universe, 80% shall be made of "dark matter". Dark matter would interact very feebly with light and can not be a particle that we already know of. This conclusion is again supported by compelling cosmology and astrophysics data that I will discuss.  The exact nature of dark matter is still a mystery today. What are the candidates for dark Matter and how are we looking for them? I will guide you through the current status of the worldwide research in this field.

What is our Universe is made of? What do we know about visible matter and how do we know it is not enough? What are possible dark matter candidates and how are we chasing them?

The Speaker: Laura Lopez Honorez (ULB)

Laura Lopez Honorez obtained her PhD from Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2007, and after being being a Postdoc in Madrid University, Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, she got appointed as a FRNS Research Associate at ULB in 2016. She works in theoretical physics in a research field at the interface between Particle Physics and Cosmology. Her research is mostly focused on dark matter models and signatures from the early universe till today.

Zee Skirts

Zee Skirts is a musician. A band also. We are not writers. I am not a writer. So there's no biography here. We would also have to lie a lot, or at least quite a bit to make our biography sound awesome. Not that our lifes are that boring. We do stuff! We go out. I saw a great movie just 3 days ago. The plot of that film centered on a space station orbiting a fictional planet, where a scientific mission had stalled because the skeleton crew of three scientists had fallen into emotional crises. It had some nice shots of a wooden dacha in summer. (If you don't know what a dacha is, check it out on google images!) Such a nice place! Really well decorated also. Would love to stay there for a while. Maybe it's on airbnb. How do I start looking for it? Google, I guess. So ... No biography. Hope you don't mind. I hope you don't mind. That I put down in words. How wonderful life is while you're in the world. That's Elton John singing in your head right now, not me. See you! Love you!
